“TWO MINNOWS”

Memoirs of an ARVN soldier

“Two Minnows” is a well annotated non-fiction memoir of a South Vietnamese soldier who fought against the communists after the American and allied forces had all left in 1973. The author had chosen to abandon his parental family and flee the incoming Peace in order to look for Freedom. Like other boat people, he was semi-incarcerated in a refugee camp, in this case in Malaysia, and finally made it to the United States to resettle. He became an educator then a school administrator to fulfill his Confucian responsibilities: serve the community of  his new home.

Two Minnows reads like an adventure novel. Why is the book title Two Minnows? Refugees in his Malaysian camp in Pulau Perhentian were all fed two minnows with rotten rice for lunch and dinner everyday. It turns out the South Vietnamese (and maybe others) were all minnows to be fed to the big fish in a proxy war.

This is a high reputable writer and a live witness of the Vietnam War with invaluable historical details. The title comes from the cultural comparison of people and their own culture in Vietnamese maxim, like fish and water. Fish can not survive without water. Vietnamese refugees in overseas are just like fishes were getting out of the water and were putting into new totally different waters or environments. It must be very hard to survive, not to mention achievement or success.

Praise & Reviews

I arrived in Vietnam in January 1962 and left in May, witnessing a different country than most veterans. Watching the war’s end, I saw ARVN soldiers discarding uniforms, fleeing the NVA. Ha Tuong’s Two Minnows resonated deeply—war renders us helpless. He and his wife endured immense hardships, escaping Saigon under constant danger. Their survival, resilience, and eventual success in America inspire. This powerful story captures war’s brutality and humanity’s endurance. I salute you, Sir, for your service and survival.
